U1300L Ex-Army Unimog Expedition Build

Our Customers Savannah & Drew in the USA purchased an ex-army U1300L from us and wanted us to add a subframe and box to give them a great base to build an overland camper.

The Starting Point

This Unimog had been an ambulance in the military so already had a box fitted but our customers wanted to be able to stand up inside and found the increased size and better insulation of one of our composite boxes made it an easy choice.

CAD Design

We built up the subframe and box in CAD, matching the subframe up to the original Mercedes 4-point mountings to create a torsion free connection.

We added a rear chamfer to the box to maintain the departure angle of the Unimog and to give the classic expedition vehicle silhouette.

Subframe Fabrication

Our subframes are made from S355 and are expertly fabricated to give strength and reliability for decades to come.

Galvanisation

Our subframes are hot dip galvanised. This gets into all the crevices and inside the tubes so we can ensure that the steel has the best corrosion protection.

Box Coming Together

Meanwhile we built the box out of our GRP and XPS Foam composite panels, these have excellent thermal properties keeping heating and cooling needs to a minimum.

Fully sealed

We add cappings along all edges and corner cappings to cover any remaining gaps so there are multiple layers of protection against any water ingress.

Ready to go

With the box and subframe on and a long range diesel tank added in conjunction with our aluminium battery box the truck was ready to be shipped over to the states for our customer's to build it out.
