Unimog U1300L Expedition Camper
With a 3.8m box on this 3.25m wheelbase Ex-Army U1300L we get the ultimate balance of spacious living accommodation and offroad performance to make a highly capable offroad expedition vehicle.
On this mog we have fitted:
- Fast Hub Gears
- Overdrive
- Intercooler Kit
- Winch Bumper
- Rear Combined Toolboxes
- Stainless Compact Access Steps
A Great Base Vehicle
This was the starting point, a test bed camper that we had created. Our customer had a different vision for the habitation box but the Unimog was the perfect base, already having a plethora of upgrades from it's standard military configuration.
CAD Design and Rendering
We first spent some time with the customer discussing the requirements for the build, proposing design solutions and building up a CAD model of the project. Here it is in it's final form, the rendering really helps to show exactly what the final vehicle will be like.
Interior Design
We considered the customer's interior design to determine the position of the windows and doors. The apertures for these are all CNC cut so they will be exactly as we specify them in the model.
Cab Passthrough Work
A different size passthrough was required for this build, so the rear panel of the cab was cut out and a replacement panel welded in before having the passthrough frame welded into place and the rear windows welded up.
Box Build
The box build starts, bonding the CNC cut panels together to form a completely metal free construction with no cold bridges.
Windows and Doors
The windows, doors and hatches are all bonded into their apertures. We use Outbound products for our build as we find these to be the best balance of quality and price. The windows are double tempered glass and hold up to the rigours of offroad driving significantly better than their plastic counterparts.
Box and Subframe
With the box complete, we attach it to our 4-point torsion free galvanised subframe ready to be mounted on the Unimog.
Onto the Mog
With some precision, the box and subframe is mounted on the original Mercedes points to give a torsion free connection between Unimog and habitation box.
Finished Build
With a coat of "mojito green" paint and the expedition accessories bolted on the build is complete and ready to go and have it's interior fitted out.
Winch Bumper
One of the additions was our winch bumper. Housing a 15000Lb winch, LED headlights and chassis mounted recovery points this not only gives the Mog a facelift but adds stacks of utility too.
Integrated Toolboxes
At the rear we added combined toolboxes, giving a full width space to store longer items. Our customer is going to build in a sliding outdoor kitchen.
Stainless Access Steps
These access steps are fully stainless steel and incorporate a landing platform into the design. As they don't rest on the floor you don't have to worry about uneven ground. We have made them to fit the space between the edge of the box and the subframe so that they don't require raising the box for clearance.
Happy Travels
Over in the USA with the finished build, our customers are travelling extensively with it and have been putting it through it's paces offroad. We look forward to following their journey for years to come.
