The Base Vehicle
The chosen vehicle was a 2015 Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 6C18 which has a GVW of 6.5t. These vehicles make an excellent base for a lighter weight expedition vehicle that are more than capable on poor gravel tracks and unkept trails but aren't required to do any extreme off-roading.
Torsion Test
To determine the best positions for the subframe mounts we carried out an articulation test, lifting the diagonally opposed wheels until a third wheel lifts.
This ensures that the torsion free subframe is mounted in the optimum position to avoid excessive forces on either the habitation box or truck chassis.
Subframe
The Canter has a step in the chassis so to maximise the box space the subframe follows this. Our subframes are designed and optimised on CAD and are fabricated out of high strength S355 steel and hot dip galvanised for ultimate corrosion protection.
Box Build
The box starts to come together, the composite panels being bonded together to create an airtight box that provides excellent ventilation.
On to the Truck
With the box complete the edges are then capped with GRP extrusions that are bonded on to reinforce the box and create a durable watertight seal.
The box is then mounted onto the subframe and joined together with the truck.
Ready for More
With the box mounted the truck is ready to receive some subframe mounted accessories: steps, toolboxes and mudguards.
Bolted On
The steps and mudguards are mounted to the subframe.
Final Testing
With the build complete a final torsion test is carried out to check that there are no clearance issues and everything is as designed. Passing this the truck is ready for it's adventures!
