Mercedes 1124AF Expedition Truck Build

This Mercedes 1120AF was fitted out with a 4.8m habitation box, brush bars, full side skirts and toolboxes and combined rear under run bar and motorbike carrier.

The Base Vehicle

This Mercedes 1120AF was in service in Germany as a fire engine and makes a great base vehicle for an expedition project with 4WD, 200HP and 11tonne GVW giving plenty of capacity for a large habitation unit.

A Good Look Over

Once the body was off the truck got a full inspection and a clean bill of health from our workshop.

CAD Design

OEM CAD models from this age of vehicle don't exist so we have built up our own models to allow the design of the components around the vehicle. The models allow for the design to be shared with the customer as it progresses, meaning that we can ensure that all customer requirements can be met.

Box Build

We fitted internal walls in this build to form a bed and shower room. Our composite panels are made from Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and Expanded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam and are incredibly strong, lightweight and insulative.

Windows In

We fitted four large windows from Outbound into this box. They are double glazed tempered glass and hold up much better to the rigours of offroad driving than the plexiglass units used on most campers.

Torsion Free Subframe

Here you can clearly see the four mounting points for the torsion free subframe, this allows the truck to articulate and prevents any torsional forces from being transferred through to the box.

Torsion Test

With the subframe fitted to the truck we carried out a torsion test to ensure that the clearances are all sufficient even at maximum articulation.

Inside the box

The rear of the box is going to be a seating area and the panoramic windows work really well here letting in lots of light.

The Finished Build

With all the accessories fitted and the truck and box painted a lovely Land Rover Grasmere Green it is ready to go with and be fitted out with it's interior.
